Most of you know I’ve taken a shine to several Spanish wines recently, and by coincidence, I came across a related article yesterday. It’s no surprise to me that these became very popular very quickly, resulting in lots of wine and low prices.

If you drink wine, it’s always best to buy in quantity, and if you like Tempranillos and Garnachas, now would be a great time to stock up the racks.

OK so I just finished that bottle…er- we just finished that bottle of Chianti, and I remain unimpressed with that particular varietal. No need to name the bottle, because it may be a perfectly good example of Chianti, it just does nothing for me.
So, in answer to Anonymous’ question: So far no. But I will continue to try them, however infrequently, and when I do find one I like, you will be the first to know!

*chuckles* That makes two of us! Seriously, the best Chianti I’ve had was from the gallon jug at Macaroni Grill (I’m not going to say “LOL”)…OK LOL.
But, since you asked, while I was at the store, I did request a recommendation and came back with one bottle of Chianti in the case. I’ll try it in the next few days and if I like it, I’ll post the details and a picture of the label.

Guenoc North Coast Victorian Claret.
One thing I’ve noticed about wine is that I can buy the same bottle, the same vintage year etc, and sometimes, it just doesn’t taste the same as the last time I had it. But there’s one bottle that is good every time, and that’s this Guenoc Victorian Claret.

I like to drink it by itself or pair it with pasta or meat dishes.
Yummm.

Cabernet Sauvignon can be tricky. The flavors vary so widely that cabs can be some of the most difficult for me to identify by taste. Some of my favorite wines are cabs, but I don’t like them as consistently as Malbecs or Tempranillos.
A good $11 bottle, though, is Sterling Vintner’s Collection Cabernet Sauvignon.

I love oak! Merlots seem to be some of the oakiest, and a tasty ten dollar bottle that comes to mind is Bogle’s Merlot. Rombauer has a really tasty one, but the tag is closer to $30.
My favorite, though, is a Washington Merlot called 14 Hands (an equestrian reference), but it’s tricky to find because it was mostly allocated to restaurants.
I’ve found that a lot of people who work in bigger wine stores LOVE to talk about and recommend wines. We’ve found a lot of good stuff this way.

Here’s another $10 bottle…Yep, and another Spanish best buy:
Red Guitar Old Vine Tempranillo (20%)/Garnacha (80%) Navarra
Good all by itself, but even better with shish-kabobs.

The Spaniards have seldom disappointed us with wine from Rioja and Navarra.
Here’s another $10 bottle we tipped last night with some spicy pepperoni pizza.
Cortijo Tinto, 2008 80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, Rioja
I’ll be picking up some more of this before we head for the canyons of Zion National Park next week.
